The caster prepares a set of divination tools — marked sticks, gem-inlaid bones, specially inscribed cards, or a bowl of clear water. They arrange these on a cloth of dark silk and light two candles on either side. The caster then poses their question clearly and precisely, speaking it aloud three times while focusing intently on the possible courses of action. The divination tools are then cast, scattered, or observed. In the stillness that follows, the caster enters a heightened state of perception where the natural world seems to offer signs: the way the bones fall, the pattern of ripples in water, the direction the candle flames lean, the sudden cry of a bird. Weal manifests as warmth, golden light, or melodious sound; woe appears as cold shadow, discordant noise, or the scent of decay. The answers are never explicit — they are feelings, impressions, nudges from the cosmos. The caster must interpret through the lens of their own wisdom and experience.
By casting gem-inlaid sticks, rolling dragon bones, laying out ornate cards, or employing some other divining tool, you receive an omen from an otherworldly entity about the results of a specific course of action that you plan to take within the next 30 minutes. The GM chooses from the following possible omens: - Weal, for good results - Woe, for bad results - Weal and woe, for both good and bad results - Nothing, for results that aren't especially good or bad The spell doesn't take into account any possible circumstances that might change the outcome, such as the casting of additional spells or the loss or gain of a companion. If you cast the spell two or more times before completing your next long rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each casting after the first that you get a random reading. The GM makes this roll in secret.
