Clans & Governance
The venerable monarch of Durumbar stands as a beacon of dwarven tradition and pragmatic leadership. Tall for a dwarf with a broad, muscular build honed by decades of combat and counsel, King Barim carries himself with the dignity befitting a ruler of his station.
A magnificent silver beard flows to his chest, meticulously braided with threads of mithral. His piercing emerald green eyes reveal both warmth and the steel of command.
He wears a mithral and gold crown of exquisite craftsmanship, commissioned by Clan Gemcutter two centuries prior. His masterwork mithral plate armor bears the hallmarks of Clan Graniteback excellence, and a dark green cloak—dyed with rare highland moss—flows behind him.
In combat, the king wields Earthbreaker, a legendary warhammer forged in the First Age, and carries a reinforced adamantine shield blessed by the deep priests.
Barim is a strategic visionary who balances time-honored tradition with measured innovation. He values craftsmanship above all, believes in fair trade and the strength of the clans working in harmony, and despises piracy, inter-clan violence, and the arrogance of surface-dwelling elves.
Passions: Fine ale, epic storytelling, the sound of hammer on anvil, and mining new territories. Dislikes: Resource waste, elven smugness, and clan leaders who prioritize gold over honor.

King Barim Ironshield holds ultimate authority, guided by centuries of dwarven tradition and ancestral wisdom. The king serves as military commander, chief judge, and final arbiter in all matters of state.

Though rivalries and tensions exist, the clans understand that unity ensures survival in the deep places of the world.

The primary political tension in Durumbar stems from Clan Flamesmith’s relentless push for magical innovation and industrial advancement versus the traditionalist stance of Clan Stonekeeper and conservative elements within Clan Ironshield. King Barim’s genius lies in mediating this conflict—neither clan dominates, and both contribute to Durumbar’s strength.
Clan Deepdelve controls the richest veins of precious metals and gems, making them immensely wealthy but also targets of envy. Clan Gemcutter resents their limited mining rights, while Clan Graniteback occasionally competes with Clan Deepdelve over adamantine deposits. The Council of Elders carefully allocates territory to prevent all-out conflict.
Clan Graniteback and Clan Ironshield maintain a strong military alliance. Clan Goldvein frequently partners with Clan Strongale for trade expeditions. A smoldering dispute exists between Clan Deepdelve and Clan Flamesmith—Deepdelve dwarves believe Flamesmith’s excavation spells cause dangerous instability, while Flamesmith insists their methods are superior. Such tensions, while carefully managed by the king, remind all clans of the cost of division.
The majority population and traditional power holders. Skilled warriors and artisans, they value honor, craftsmanship, and clan loyalty above all else.
More socially flexible and trade-oriented, concentrated in Port Stonehaven. They serve as diplomats and merchants, bridging the gap between subterranean and surface commerce.
Valued engineers and tinkerers, particularly within Clan Flamesmith. Their magical aptitude and creative problem-solving make them essential to innovation efforts.
Cooks, brewers, and entertainers within the halls. Their warmth and humor provide vital morale and cultural richness to dwarven communities.
Traders and diplomats, often employed in Port Stonehaven. Skilled negotiators who understand both dwarven tradition and surface politics.
Rare and typically scholars or diplomats. Dwarven culture maintains polite distance from elves, though mutual respect for craftsmanship occasionally bridges the divide.
