Weather, NPCs & encounters
Perched upon the grey stone cliffs of the Mistral River's northern reaches, Stormwatch Garrison commands the convergence of the river with the main northern trade route — an uncompromising chokepoint through which all river traffic and overland caravans must pass.
Captain Elric Sorn, a twenty-year veteran of quiet confidence and encyclopedic knowledge of every bend and ford along the Mistral, leads approximately three hundred personnel: two hundred soldiers, fifty river guard operating the patrol fleet, thirty forest rangers providing early warning, and twenty cavalry riders for rapid response and merchant escort. Increasingly, Sorn's legendary composure shows signs of strain — his repeated requests for reinforcements against escalating Frostvall raids grow more urgent with each dispatch.
Grey stone quarried from the Stonetalon Range foothills, reinforced with heavy timber palisades. Three watchtowers with ballistae rise above the treeline, commanding views across the river and woodland approaches.
Stone walls thick enough to withstand sustained siege. From its highest ramparts, the river winds northward like a silver serpent, disappearing into mist-shrouded forests beyond.
Economic and logistical heart of the garrison. All river traffic submits to inspection and taxation here. A fleet of shallow-draft patrol boats navigates the Mistral's unpredictable currents. Emergency evacuation boats remain perpetually ready.
Weapon and armor maintenance continues without pause. The clang of hammer on anvil echoes day and night — a metallic reminder of the endless work required to sustain military readiness.

Trading vessels on the Mistral River
Approximately one hundred fifty Caledrian souls live in the garrison's protective shadow. Fisherfolk harvest trout, pike, and prized river crawfish. Woodcutters provide timber for repairs and heating. Skilled artisans support both military and civilian needs — blacksmiths, weavers, tanners, and carpenters.
Social and economic nexus of village life. Strong ale, well-prepared meals, and a proprietor who knows how to extract information from her patrons. Functions as the garrison's unofficial intelligence center, where rumors of Frostvall movements mingle with tales of strange river lights.
Comes alive when merchant caravans arrive. Preserved fish, cord, finished timber, and handicrafts exchange hands with regional trade items. The village's connection to the wider world — where news from distant lands flows in with the merchants.
Shallow-draft boats moving day and night, inspecting traffic, collecting tolls, and watching for smuggling or unauthorized movement.
Cavalry and soldiers riding with merchant companies between Stormwatch and Fort Valiance, their armed presence discouraging brigand attacks.
Forest rangers penetrating deep into the treeline, serving as the early warning system against approaching threats from the north.
Beacon fires connecting to Fort Valiance, capable of transmitting warnings across miles in minutes. Watchtowers ready at all hours.
Ranger networks and village contacts forming a shadow apparatus to understand northern movements and intentions before they become direct assaults.

Stormwatch's weathered stone walls
Escalating from opportunistic attacks to coordinated assaults suggesting unified leadership. Each raid inflicts casualties and erodes supply reserves. Captain Sorn fears a single overwhelming assault could breach defenses.
Rangers report shadowy figures moving through the forest at night — humanoid shapes that vanish when approached. Unearthly sounds carried on the northern wind, neither beast nor human voice.
Unexplained luminescence in the Mistral itself — distant glows moving against the current, flickering patterns in deep water. River folk refuse to fish certain sections after dark.
Organized bandits with sophisticated knowledge of patrol patterns strike between scheduled escort runs, suggesting corrupted personnel or a northern intelligence network.
The signal network has begun misfiring — beacon fires show no corresponding signal from southern stations. Captain Sorn fears sabotage or corruption among the signal corps. Someone may be trying to isolate Stormwatch from support.
Fishing catches have declined sharply where strange lights appear. Several boats returned with damaged hulls and confused crews. Something is awakening in the river's depths, threatening the garrison's economic lifeline.
A captured raider possesses detailed knowledge of patrol patterns and vulnerable positions. Sorn needs agents to infiltrate the northern intelligence network and eliminate this advantage before the next coordinated assault.
Strange carved marks found on ancient trees deep in the forest. A woodcutter's daughter has gone missing near them — her last message mentioned 'figures in the darkness' and 'the northern call.'
